- Title
The history and future of Patuá in Paria: Report on initial language revitalization efforts for French Creole in Venezuela.
- Authors
Ferreira, Jo-Anne S.
- Abstract
The article focuses on the language revitalization work being done in Venezuela in regards to the Venezuelan French Creole, or Patuá, dialect. Details are given overviewing the historical origins and linguistic development of Venezuelan French Creole, particularly as manifested in the Paria Peninsula from the early 18th-century to the modern era. Efforts by cultural anthropologists to prevent the dialect's extinction are profiled, noting plans for teaching venues, establishing a unified orthography, and promoting authentic revitalization rather than simple preservation.
