The article discusses the etymology of the English plant name flag for irises. The Danish, Dutch, and British Latin language versions of the word are mentioned, and the online Oxford English Dictionary (OED), the "Dictionary of Medieval Latin From British Sources" (DML), and the "Middle English Dictionary" (MED) are cited. The term as a place name, the spelling of the word since the 14th century, and the word's stratigraphy are discussed, as well as the word's toponymic meaning and relation to the term hawthorn tree.
