The article discusses the etymologies of the words "capstan," "windlass," "winch," "haul," "hoist," and "tow." All words pertain to the processes of hoisting and hauling objects and, more specifically, shipping. The author also provides the definitions of these six words from the "Oxford English Dictionary" ("OED").
