- Title
SWIFT'S YAHOO AND LESLIE'S HOTTENTOT.
- Authors
Eilon, Daniel
- Abstract
The article compares the two fictitious character "Hottentot" and "Yahoo" in the works of authors Jonathan Swift and Charles Leslie. The article reports that resemblances of these two characters are striking. The similarities are to be found in the use both authors made of the contrast between natural man and his distant European cousin. Swift considered the importation of foreign manufactures to be a symptom not of the sophistication but of the corruption of a country. He insisted on this point in his "Short View of the State of Ireland and "A Modest Proposal."
