- Abstract
A critique of the epic poem ""Gerusalemme liberata" by Torquato Tasso is presented, focusing on the poet's use of conterfactual plot devices similar to those used in the "Iliad" by Homer. The author describes Tasso's depiction of free will versus divine providence or fate, the analysis of countertectuals by literary critic Irene de Jong, and Tasso's use of guardian angels. Tasso's poem is set during the religious war the First Crusades, and the author describes the poem's historical context.
