Presents a basal bony fish with an unexpected mix of characteristics which forces a reconsideration of large parts of the vertebrate family tree. Age of the Psarolepis, from the earliest Devonian and latest Silurian of Unnan in south China; Earliest osteichthyan known from remains of skull and shoulder girdle; Its incongruous features; Implications in the interpretation of osteichthyan phylogeny; Attempt to establish a preliminary phylogenetic position for Psarolepis by incorporating it into two competing published osteichthyan data sets.
