- Abstract
The article presents information on the second Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR2) introduced in the U.S. The rule features an assessment monitoring component that would have 3,910 public water systems look for 11 priority chemicals using six well-established analytical methods. The rule also includes a screening survey that would have 1,122 systems monitor for 15 other targeted chemicals using specialized and less commonly used methods. Scheduled for promulgation by August 2006, the rule would apply to community water systems and non-transient-non-community water systems. Unlike the first UCMR (UCMR1) of 1999, for which participating systems completed monitoring in 2004, the second round of unregulated contaminant monitoring does not target any microbial contaminants and does not include a prescreening component, which was never completed under UCMR1 for lack of available methods. Large-system monitoring must be conducted using designated methods by USEPA-approved laboratories through a process that requires application and proficiency testing.
