- Abstract
This research describes the social representations of old age and aging in two groups of women in the city of Medellín: one of young people and the other of older women. It starts from the concept of social representations about old age and aging as ways of achieving good sense in relation to conventional reality, which makes it accessible to a common meaning by which it is understood that old age is a production of society, elaborated by culture and, specifically, by social interaction. With a qualitative approach, the information was obtained from surveys, interviews, and observations of two groups of women in Medellín: one of young people from eighteen to twenty-five years old and the other from those over fifty to sixty years of age. Among the results and conclusions, it is evident that there is a contrast with respect to perception, attitude and the figurative nucleus, considering the current moment of life, since it is not the same to be in the stage of youth than in the stage of old age. In addition, it must be borne in mind that there are difficulties when generalizing the characteristics of old age in humans, since each subject reaches aging with different learning experiences acquired in different sociocultural contexts, which is why the characteristics that are presented in Old age in relation to psychological functions and cognitive functions are shown differently in each individual.
