- Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common reproductive endocrine disorder, affecting approximately 10% of women. PCOS is a complex condition, the symptoms are also highly diverse and therefore its therapy is also based on several pillars. Therapies which, in addition to the treatment of physical symptoms, also focus on the psyhological pillar prove to be particularly effective. Our research aims to gain knowledge about the representation of PCOS of women diagnosed with the disorder. In our research we examined the representations of PCOS by applying a qualitative procedure: we asked the participants to describe PCOS with a metaphor. After content analysis, the metaphors were classified into 4 thematic units: 1. enemy, 2. uncertainty, 3. burden, 4. growth. Our results showed a relationship between the metaphors and the resilience scores of the participants. Those women who described their disorder with a metaphor classified as „growth” scored significantly higher on the resilience scale compared to the other thematic categories. Our findings suggest that the metaphors could reflect on the person’s current psychological state, therefore incorporating the method into the therapeutic practice could help monitoring women’s struggles and coping. Furthermore it would allow to keep track of the subjective experiences of the psychological changes accompanying the diverse symptoms of PCOS.
