- Abstract
Phytase has largely been reported for increasing mineral utilization but when growth performance was evaluated, effects appeared to be inconsistent in swine. With the hypothesis that high doses of phytases may affect growth performance and compensate reduced dietary nutrients, graded amounts of 3 phytases were evaluated in 2 separate experiments (Exp. 1 and 2) with 28-d-old weaned piglets and 70-d-old growing-finishing (G-F) pigs. All animals were fed, ad libitum, throughout a 42-d period for piglets and an 84-d period for G-F pigs, a corn/soybean meal-based diet either with recommended nutrient levels or with reduced nutrient levels (matrix control diet [MC]). Phytases were supplemented to MC at 0, 1,000, 2,000, and 3,000 units/kg for RONOZYME HiPhos in both experiments or at 0, 500, 1,000, and 1,500 units/kg for both Quantum Blue in Exp. 1 and Axtra Phy in Exp. 2. In piglets, ADG was improved (P < 0.05) in the MC diets supplemented with RONOZYME HiPhos at 1,000, 2,000, and 3,000 units/kg and the MC diet supplemented with Quantum Blue at 1,500 units/kg in Exp. 1 and in the MC diets supplemented with RONOZYME HiPhos at 2,000 and 3,000 units/kg and the MC diet supplemented with Axtra PHY at 1,000 units/kg in Exp. 2 in comparison with the respective MC. In both G-F trials, ADG was lower (P < 0.05) in animals receiving the MC than in all phytase-fed animals. Similar effects were observed in ADFI and feed conversion ratio in piglets and G-F pigs. High dosages of phytase had beneficial effects on pig performance, compensating the reduced nutrient levels.
