- Abstract
The article "The Compulsion in the Matter Itself" reports on Adorno's last lecture on negative dialectics. Adorno examines the question of whether the surveillance society, as diagnosed by Foucault, is capitalist and whether power relations or structures of domination determine late modern society. Adorno attempts to trace the contradiction in thinking back to its social foundations and emphasizes that dialectics is not only a method but also a compulsion in the matter itself. The lecture offers an opportunity to correct the understanding of dialectics and shows that it is a theory that can critically reflect on social reality. Adorno emphasizes the importance of expression and experience amidst conceptual thinking and calls for a materialist turn in dialectics.
