- Abstract
The physiology of pregnancy influences the pharmacokinetics of the medications used, and some pharmaceuticals can harm the unborn if they reach it. This makes pregnancy a unique physiological condition where drug treatment raises significant concerns. Because some women enter pregnancy with medical disorders that require continuous and episodic medication (such as asthma, epilepsy, and hypertension), complete avoidance of pharmaceutical therapy is not possible and may even be dangerous. Additionally, while pregnant, existing medical conditions can worsen or acquire new ones (such as migraines and headaches), necessitating the need of medication. During her pregnancy, each woman takes an average of four to five different medications, plus an unknown number of other substances. The investigation into the effects of teratogenic chemicals on the lives of developing humans used a qualitative method. Teratogens are substances that can result in abnormalities. These substances include drugs, chemicals, diseases, alcohol, tobacco in various types of cigarettes, pollution, the health of the mother, her age, and her diet. The studies that have been done on teratogenic incidents involving human embryos are analysed here. Keywords: teratogenic drugs, physiology of pregnancy, Food and drug administration (FDA) categories of drugs, drug use in pregnancy.
