- Abstract
The article focuses on the history of religious associations in Southwestern France during the Ancien Régime from the late 16th century to 1789. These associations were called confréries and were different than the groups that comprised the main congregation or the monastic religious orders. Members of these confréries did not take any religious vows and they were welcome to leave the association at any time. The author presents an historiographical overview of research in this area, which he argues flourished during the 1960s to 1980s. He argues for new research in this field and discusses the research that historian Claude Langlois has done surrounding religious congregations and fraternal organizations.
