FOUR ILLUSTRATIONS OF HEALTHY PERSONALITY: A PRESCRIPTION FOR LIVING THE GOOD LIFE.
- Authors
Hightower, Eugene
- Abstract
This article presents a study which follows in the tradition of Jahoda in arguing that the study of the lives of psychologically healthy individuals can add to the understanding of mental health. The Personal Orientation Inventory (POI) is used to identify four psychologically healthy middle-aged adults. The POI is a forced-choice objective test designed by researcher, Everett Shostrom to measure self-actualizing tendencies. Shostrom states that his test indicates the degree to which the subject's attitudes and values correspond to those of self-actualizing people. Shostrum described the self-actualizer as "a person developing and utilizing his unique talents to the fullest extent."
