- Abstract
This article describes a study which was aimed to assess the degree to which findings from interspouse personality trait research may be generalized to other samples even when matched on several major traditional dimensions. This study compared three samples from previous studies on their degrees of interspouse personality similarity as measured by Cattell's 16 Personality Factor Questionnaire. Two of these samples, A and B, were roughly matched on age, education, and social class; the third sample, C, represented a similar age group of lower socioeconomic status and with an average of 3 to 7 years less education. As predicted from prior research, a number of factors were correlated significantly across all three samples. The data presented here suggest that the confidence with which findings and conclusions are generalized across spousal samples should be considered care fully both by researchers and users of research.
