- Title
Mexico's Flat Tax: Answer to the Country's Prayers?
- Authors
Mario Barrera-Vazquez
- Abstract
The article discusses the impact of the imposition of the Flat Tax, as proposed by the Executive Branch of Mexico, on the economic performance of business enterprises in the country. Mexican President Felipe Calderón enacted Flat Tax, which was proposed to Congress on June 2007 and is still being discussed by the legislative body. According to the report, the enactment of the Flat Tax would immediately eliminate the Asset Tax which is currently in force and eventually could replace Income Tax. The main purpose of Flat Tax is to raise revenue by increasing the tax burden of the same taxpayers. However, it was believed that the risk of the new tax could be to discourage domestic and international investments in Mexico.
