- Abstract
The article discusses the nature of software failure. Programming errors can result in a failure whose consequences will depend, in part, on how well segregated the stricken process is from others. Another type of failure emerges gradually over time. Mission-critical software programs that are repeatedly modified to fit changing demands can fail when their underlying hardware is replaced, or when efforts are made to excise no-longer-relevant but firmly embedded portions of code. In contrast, Lucent, eBay, and Amazon have all implemented robust software architectures that can stand up to continual evolution.
