- Abstract
The authors examine what 25 years worth of data on software testing can reveal about the effectiveness of different testing methods. Their analysis of various studies comparing methods yielded several insights. No one method appeared clearly superior to all others. In half the cases random testing proved no less effective than other approaches. Fault detection could not be assured even when optimal coverage was achieved by data-flow and control-flow methods. Looking ahead, the authors believe more information needs to be published about the types of faults different testing methods can detect.
