- Abstract
The article focuses on the debate on conversion initiated by the Sangh Parivar in India during 1998-1999. After setting out the historical background to how and why this debate came about, including the role of Pope John Paul II's visit to India at the end of 1999, the author in this article examines conversion from the perspective of Hindus and then subsequent Christian re-thinking of conversion. The article concludes that the debate was due to a clash of two radically different religious frameworks as found in Christianity and Hinduism.
