- Abstract
The article presents an overview of political developments in Japan as of December 2008. It presents details on the composition of the Japanese parliament, known as the Diet, for its 166th through 168th sessions in 2007. The goals and strategies of political parties such as the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), the Komei Party, and the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) are analyzed. The efforts of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to establish a legal framework for constitutional amendment referendums are noted, and his replacement by Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda is discussed.
