- Abstract
In this article we are interested in the development of French philology in Slovenia. We first present some written documents that show an interest in the French language between the 17th and 19th centuries, and then we evoke the French presence, or more precisely the period of Illyrian Provinces that have marked the history of Slovenia. We present the impact of this period on the national language and the educational system. We also mention two famous men who played an important role: the novelist Charles Nodier who gave his name to the present French Institute, located in the capital city of Ljubljana, and the linguist Lucien Tesnière who was the first lecturer in French at the University of Ljubljana. The arrival of the latter coincided with the beginnings of Romance philology in Slovenia. We conclude with a presentation of French language teaching in Slovenia.
