- Abstract
Up until the present day there is surprisingly little research on the 1980 Constitutional Plebiscite, and even less on this process and its relationship to women and gender. In this text we will analyze how the Pinochet dictatorship cast the 1980 Constitution in a positive light for women and how right-wing women were involved in this process. Importantly for our argument, the work of right-wing women was organized through the National Women's Secretariat (SNM) and CEMA-Chile and Lucía Hiriart played a key role in this. In this manner, the role of "mother of the fatherland"- which Lucia sought to represent -was extended to other Chilean women, emphasizing their "responsibility" in the challenge of transforming Chile, promoting values such as freedom, anti-marxism and the traditional Christian family as intrinsic components of the "Si" vote in the plebiscite. Analysis for this exploratory paper, part of a larger Fondecyt regular project, is based on review of press and magazines favorable to, or produced by, the Pinochet dictatorship in the months immediately previous to the September 11, 1980 plebiscite, as well as on relevant secondary bibliography.
