- Abstract
Andrea van Leerdam's book, "Woodcuts as Reading Guides: How Images Shaped Knowledge Transmission in Medical-Astrological Books in Dutch (1500–1550)," explores the role of images in Dutch medical-astrological books from the sixteenth century. The author argues that woodcuts in these books served rhetorical functions and aided in the interpretation and visualization of medical-astronomical knowledge. The book provides a comprehensive survey of medical-astronomical works from this time period and offers a multidisciplinary framework for further study on visual epistemology. The study highlights the importance of woodcuts in organizing, visualizing, and conveying the reliability of knowledge in these books.
