Responsibility for the Fall of Cabinets in the French Fourth Republic, 1951-1955.

- Abstract
An "internal" explanation for the fall of cabinets during the Fourth Republic assigns responsibility to the less cohesive and less ideologically oriented parties and to ministrables rather than to rank-and-file deputies. An "external" explanation assigns responsibility in opposite fashion. Competing hypotheses based upon these explanations are tested for the cabinets of the 1951-1955 Legislature. Findings are positive for the external explanation between 1951 and 1953, and for the internal explanation between 1953 and 1955. Changes in inter-party alignments in 1953 help account for this difference.
