AHR Forum: The Three Ages of Joan Scott.
- Authors
ELLIOTT, DYAN
- Abstract
This article examines the influence of historian Joan Scott who pioneered the field of gendered historiography and feminist history. The author contends Scott's argument can be divided into three parts. He connects her concepts to those of Joachim of Fiore, a medieval scholar, who divided history into three distinct ages. He calls them the "Age of the Mother," which roughly corresponds to the 1970s as distinctions between gender and biological sex were first made; "Age of the Daughter," and "Age of Gender," are the other two.
