- Abstract
Introduction: Hospitalization in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) has significant effects on family members with important repercussions on their lives, Objective: The objective of the study is to assess the impact of ICU admissions on the quality of life of families of hospitalized patients. Method: This is qualitative study that used a phenomenological approach. A structured interview was conducted on 100 family members of patients admitted in the period between May 2019 and November 2019. Results: 100 family members were involved, 73 women (73%) and 27 men (27%). The average age of the people interviewed was 51.50 and the median 50. The interview was conducted on average 6.3 days after hospitalization. The results show that 36% of interviewees have no longer time for themselves or other family members, and no social life. 71% of people report feeling tense, overloaded and would like to escape from this situation. Daily activities were also impacted, in fact about 60% reported feeling tired, 40% report having difficulty sleeping, and around 15% having to take sleeping medication. In addition, people's diet and work schedules were also influenced. More than 35% report that they have no longer regular eating habits. 31% cannot work as usual, and 14% said they had to leave work, even if only temporarily. Discussion: The results highlight that patients' admission to ICU significantly effects family members life. For this reason, it is vital that a family-centered care approach is utilized.
