- Abstract
The relation between individual and society was what intellectuals focused on during the period of the May 4th Movement. Before 1923, Qu Qiubai's cognition on the relation was influenced by the previous thinkers, but he also had his own point of view. He not only thought much about individual development, but paid close attention to individuals' social responsibility. He commenced to talk about the integration of individual development and social development as well as the relation between individuality and class. After 1923, he revised and altered his view on the relation because of his intensive study and application of Marxism. He did not give up the pursuit of individual development at that time, and still recognized individuals' historical value, but he focused his attention on the theoretical construction and discussed the decisive part that society plaid in molding the characters of individuals, the class nature of individuals' outlook on life. His intended to say that individual development must integrate with social development and class development and the pursuit of individuality which was divorced from reality and collective wouldn't be realized.
