- Abstract
A criticism is presented of the film "12 Years a Slave," directed by Steve McQueen. Particular focus is given to the film's depiction of 19th century slavery in the U.S., including in regard to a slave referred to as Jaspers' perspective on the free African American Solomon Northup, the whipping of slaves, the passage of time during enslavement and the kidnapping of Northup into slavery.
