- Abstract
The article focuses on the southern Amazon red squirrel, Sciurus spadiceus, and its ability for alarm signaling. The author discusses the evolution and significance of alarm signaling in social animals. Sciurus spadiceus is chosen since it has been little studied and is a solitary species that is only sometimes seen in small groups. Alarm signaling is found to be used for protecting mates or potential mates and will sometimes use alarms for the benefit of impromptu formed groups.
