- Abstract
The article examines the implications of the assumptions about nineteenth-century liberalism and conservatism for contemporary political and economic issues, debates and conflicts in Latin America, particularly in Guatemala. The central element in Guatemala's socioeconomic and political changes during the 19th century is discussed. The issue of internal administration and governance at the Liberal Academy of Science and the Conservative University of San Carlos is examined as well.
