- Title
The House in Time: In Search of a Just Image.
- Authors
Carter, Rebecca Louise
- Abstract
This essay considers the photographic encounter in Black New Orleans, focusing on a news image of a fire that destroyed several homes in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. I trace the circulation of this image, first published in Time, examining the devastation it documents as well as the race and class stereotypes it perpetuates. I simultaneously follow the homeowners as they renegotiate the photograph, asserting their true identity and position. Inspired by Roland Barthes and the search for a "just" image, the essay explores the possibilities of the photographic encounter for the reclamation of Black being and dwelling.
