- Abstract
The Malecu (Guatuso, Costa Rica) traditional culture is in an advanced state of displacement. In this context, the ideological principle of authenticity and originality regarding the genetic purity and legitimjof cultural practices has both emerged and consolidated. This article explains how this ideology manifests itself in the debate about the possibility of creating new words in the Malecu language, how the Malecu language teacher has proceeded about terminological planning, and why the distinction between language as a system for the representation of the "authentic" traditional culture and language as a communicative code is relevant when attempting to understand the Malecus' seemingly ambiguous position towards neologisms: they reject them in deliberate discourse but produce and accept them in daily spontaneous interaction to be able to meet their expressive needs in specific communicative contexts.
