- Abstract
The article discusses the settlement of land disputes in the Northern Forest, a contiguous stretch of forestland extending from upstate New York through Maine. It mentions the purchased of over 900,000 acres of land in Maine in late 1990s by the largest landowner in the country, Plum Creek Timber Co. Inc. It notes the sale of option agreement by International Paper Co. to the not-for-profit conservation organization Trust for Public Land for over 171,000 acres of timberland in the Connecticut Lakes region in northern New Hampshire. Moreover, it provides recommendations to land use regulatory bodies, private developers and other stakeholders for using collaborative process in land transaction.
