The essay discusses historical efforts to commemorate the Hudson River Valley of New York's role in the U.S. Revolutionary War. The author focuses on the work of historian Benson John Lossing of Poughkeepsie, New York, who compiled an illustrated history of the Revolution that focused on the Hudson Valley, as well as the preservation of U.S. President and General George Washington's Headquarters in Newburgh, New York.
