The article focuses on the exemption of engineering from licensing in the U.S. Topics include the formation of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) in 1869, medical licenses not being provided to practitioners of alternative medicine discussed in Dent v. West Virginia, the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) being urged to create licensing laws by civil engineer David Steinman and engineers being protected through the exemption according to engineer M. J. Kolhoff.
