- Abstract
The current study examined a number of issues related to dishonesty in the workplace. It focused on the reported frequency of dishonest acts, the importance attached to honesty and the methods that organisations use to assess honesty. Data was collected from a sample of 279 personnel managers from various geographical locations and organisational sectors in the UK. The results indicated that although certain dishonest acts occur within organisations, in the main they are believed to be a low base rate phenomenon. Personnel managers rate honesty and integrity as the most important characteristic among a number of work-related attributes for employees in their organisation. They report using a number of methods to assess for honesty, with interviews and references predominating. The present data provides a basis for reconciling previously discrepant estimates of base rate for dishonest behaviour in the workplace.
