- Abstract
This article examines the practice of performance appraisal in the NHS, reporting the findings from a case study in a Trust hospital. Drawing on interview, survey and documentary evidence, the effectiveness of performance appraisal is explored. Despite identifying a number of problems and tensions with the operation of the appraisal system, the study finds considerable organisational and individual benefits accruing from its use. The article concludes by considering some of the practical implications of the findings for building on the strengths and easing some of the tensions of performance appraisal.
