- Title
The Distortion of Campus Protests over Gaza.
- Authors
BENEDICT, HELEN
- Abstract
The article discusses the ongoing protests at Columbia University regarding the conflict in Gaza. Outside the campus, pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian demonstrators face off, while inside the campus, students peacefully protest and engage in academic activities. The author, a tenured professor, observes that the protesting students, mostly undergraduate women, have shown decorum despite their anger and grief. The article criticizes the university administration for suspending student groups and highlights the distortion of the narrative by the right, which focuses on alleged antisemitism rather than the death toll in Gaza. The author emphasizes the importance of free speech and the need to address the real threats faced by students, such as harassment and police presence. The article concludes by reiterating the demands of the student protesters and suggesting that history will vindicate their cause.
