- Abstract
Cuba is currently experiencing a severe humanitarian crisis, with rising costs of basic necessities, rolling blackouts, and a shortage of food and medicine. The United States has imposed a strict embargo on Cuba for over 50 years, causing significant suffering for the Cuban people. While President Obama made efforts to ease these restrictions, President Trump reversed much of the progress. Unfortunately, President Biden has maintained most of the Trump policies, exacerbating the crisis. Maryland Senator Ben Cardin, who now holds a powerful position in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has the opportunity to help end the blockade and alleviate the suffering of the Cuban people. Many organizations and community leaders have urged him to take action, as polls show that a majority of Democrats and Republicans support ending the blockade. The United Nations General Assembly has also repeatedly condemned the blockade. It is important to address this injustice and respect the dignity of all people.
