- Abstract
Objective: To identify the changes that occur in the IMR associated to pain and mandibular opening limitation. Material and methods. 35 subjects (mean age 30.62 ± 15.57 years old), male and female were studied. Mandibular opening was classified in two groups (group 1 ≥ 40 mm, group 2 ≤ 40 mm), mandibular movements, TMJ and muscular palpation pain were studied. The IMR was obtained bilaterally with electromyography techniques. Inhibitory/potentiatory wave duration was measured. Results. Pain did not affect significatively the IMR; this had statistically significative differences associated to mandibular opening limitation. Group 1 presented higher values in duration of right inhibition (F = 4.42; p = 0.043), left (F = 7.39; p = 0.01-0); amplitude of right inhibition (F = 3.811, p = 0.059) and left (F = 3.145, p = 0.085); group 2 presented higher values in duration of right potentiation (F = 5.280, p = 0.028) left (F = 4.117, p = 0.051) and in amplitude of right potentiation (F = 5.171, p = 0.030) left (F = 1.791, p = 0.190). Conclusions: Pain did not explain the IMR variations, in contrast the opening mandibular limitation decrease the inhibition duration and increase the duration of the potentiation.
