- Abstract
BACKGROUND: Vitiligo is a depigmenting disorder of autoimmune origin that has a possible relationship with vitamin D since it increases melanogenesis and tyrosinase content in melanocytes. OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between vitamin D levels in patients with vitiligo that attend phototherapy in the University IPS and the baseline clinical severity. MATERIAL AND METHOD: An analytical cross-sectional study was done from June 2016 to February 2018. The serum vitamin D levels of patients older than 18 years were evaluated and the clinical severity was measured according to the affected body surface with the VES tool (Vitiligo extent score), before starting the phototherapy treatment. RESULTS: Seventy-one patients were evaluated with vitiligo (mean age: 47.6 years) with median duration of the disease of 60 months. The insufficiency and deficiency of vitamin D was found in 22 (31.1%) and 23 (32.3%) patients, respectively; 36.6% had levels of 25 (OH)D3 ≥ 30 ng/mL. The median in the VES score was 2.6%, and the median value of the vitamin D was 26.6 ng/mL. When correlating vitamin D levels with the VES score, no association was shown. CONCLUSIONS: There was no association between vitamin D levels and the extent of the affected body surface.
