You Were Not Born Here.

- Abstract
The author reflects on how her knowledge on being an African-American in America was rationalized by the label "she was not born here" which she perceived as an alienation, foreignness and outsideness within and beyond the academy. She notes that having been born in Nairobi, Kenya gained a different meaning when used to reconstruct her according to Western norms. She cites occasion when she was thought of to be as unknowledgeable about the African-American experience in the U.S. because she was not born there which confused her when she did not understand how being born outside the U.S. made her less knowledgeable. She suggests for African-American female scholar to know that their academic endeavors must justify a collective struggle to speak the truth.
