- Title
Parody and Poetic Tradition: Gilbert and Sullivan's Patience.
- Authors
WILLIAMS, CAROLYN
- Abstract
A literary criticism of the light opera "Patience" by librettist William S. Gilbert and composer Sir Arthur Sullivan is presented. The article states that the play divides Victorian poetry into two camps, the aesthetic and the idyllic, and parodies both. Characters representing each present poetry in a quest to win the affections of the heroine. The article shows that in revealing the characters, the play pokes fun at Victorian poetry in general.
