A critique is presented of the 18th century concept of poetic justice in the epic poem "The Faerie Queene" by 16th century English poet Edmund Spenser. The philosophy of natural punishment is discussed, as well as Spenser's attitudes toward guilt and justice. Elizabethan emblem books featuring allegorical engravings are mentioned.
