- Abstract
The article offers the author's insights on the role of the ticking-bomb scenario in molding public attitudes regarding the nature of torture and torturers. The author says that the scenario promotes the necessity narrative of torture, wherein the torturer acts as a noble hero who reluctantly forced to do what needs to be done to save lives. She mentions that necessity narrative torturer is not trained in the use of torture. She states that it is important to consider what the necessity narrative reveals regarding the status of prohibition against torture. Moreover, she notes that torture seeks to use the intense suffering of victim in forcing them to do the will of the torturer, in which it utilizes various ways such as sleep deprivation and noise bombardment.
