- Abstract
Three androgenic hormones, testosterone, mesterolone (proviron) and halotestin were compared as leucopoietic stimulants in rats treated with 0.2 mg of nitrogen mustard. The leucocyte reserve was determined at the end of each experiment by injecting salmonella vaccine. Data were analyzed to compare differences between prophylactic and therapeutic treatments, and between sexes. Results obtained with equal doses of testosterone in both irradiated and chemotherapeutic treated rats were also compared. It was concluded that the hormones stimulated the bone marrow during injection without elevating the amount of white blood cells in the reservoirs which were depressed after chemotherapy. Consequently, the addition of the endotoxin had no effect on the bone marrows. Copyright © 1971 S. Karger AG, Basel
