- Abstract
An investigation was carried out to assess groundwater quality in the Northern parts of Ranebennur taluk, Haveri district. One hundred and fifty groundwater samples from tube wells were collected from 50 villages. The results revealed that the pH of groundwater samples ranged from 6.6 to 8.2 with an average value of 7.21. Groundwater samples were neutral to slightly alkaline. The EC of groundwater samples ranged from 0.68 to 5.67 dSm-1 with an average value of 3.30 dSm¹ . Among different cations and anions, Na+ and Cl- were predominant in groundwater followed by Ca2+, Mg2+, K+ and SO42-, HCO3 -, CO32-, respectively. Nitrate and boron content had an average value of 13.26 mmol L-1 and 0.57 mg kg-1, respectively. Sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), Residual sodium carbonate (RSC), Total hardness (TH) and Total dissolved solids (TDS) were 14.05, 1.15 mmol L-1, 23.06 mg L-1 and 2115.37 mg L-1, respectively. Groundwater quality classification (CSSRI, Karnal) indicated the majority of the groundwater (81.33 %) samples had high SAR saline to high SAR alkali in the Northern parts of Ranebennur taluk.
