- Abstract
Background. Much research has been devoted to the problem of language behavior. In this study we have focused on the capital and analyzed the language behavior of the civil servants of Kyiv. This article deals with the problem of functioning of the Ukrainian and Russian language in communication of the civil servants. Purpose. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the language behavior of the civil servants during their work and distinguish the most widespread types of the language behavior. Methods. The research was conducted by analyzing the videos of hotlines, where the Kyiv civil servants communicate with the citizens. The total duration of videos is 12 hours. Results. The language behavior of each civil servant is different: from demonstrating of language stability to the constant switching of language codes. On this evidence we can describe die following types of language behavior of officials: 1) switching of language codes depending on the language of the interlocutor; 2) die use of the official language; 3) the use of the Russian language code contrary to the requirements of the legislation. The second and third types can be determined as demonstrating of language stability when the Ukrainian- speaking and Russian-speaking participants use only their usual language and don't switch the language codes. The previous sentence of the odier communicant has no influence on die choice of the language. Conclusions. Therefore, the results of our study show three possible patterns of language behavior, that can be observed during the videos: language stability (both Ukrainian and Russian), code-switching and their mixing. The main reason for code-switching is the language of the interlocutor.
