- Title
TRANSLATING AMHARIC POEMS.
- Authors
Bellete, Bahrnegash
- Abstract
The article discusses the difficulties of translating Amharic poems into English. It illustrates the unstranlatable nature of Amharic poetry with the profusion of the highly regarded genre called "qªna" that exploits the double meaning of many words and metaphors to convey two entirely different meanings in the same set of verses. The article also underscores the differing syntactical structure of the English and Amharic grammars and the challenges posed by the different morphologies and alphabets of the two languages.
