- Abstract
In the early modern period, in addition to their domestic work women in Slovakia also gradually managed to infiltrate the "men's" world related to the performance of a certain craft. An example is Alžbeta Oberlandová from Banská Bystrica, who as the single woman until the end of the 17th century was to hold the profession of a bookbinder, book distributor and colporteur. In her estate recorded in 1666 we find 2112 copies of books of various kinds. Oberlandová had built up her stock of books in line with the demand of potential clients, which was fixed not only in the school regulations of local schools, but also in religious affiliation and, last but not least, in the ever growing desire of the Slovak-speaking population of Banská Bystrica to own a book in Slovak. From a thematic point of view, Alžbeta Oberlandová's warehouse contained mainly textbooks, dictionaries and reading and spelling books in German, Latin and Slovak; a somewhat smaller portion of the stock was taken up by evangelical prayers, hymnals, Slovak and Latin catechisms. Oberlandová's business spirit was also transformed into a range of Catholic titles: prayers, hymnals or textbooks. Secular professional literature has the smallest representation - Oberlandová held only one copy of astrology, arithmetic, chronicle, history, cynology and books of herbs. Interestingly, the bookbinder did not pay any attention at all to mining-related titles, which were widely found in the private libraries of the townspeople living in the mining towns. Even though there are no preserved records of the success of book sales, the content of the book range, showing typical features of customer orientation and geographical conditions, in the least gives us proof of this woman's dexterity, granting her the well-deserved right not to be forgotten.
